We know the platform well — we even built our own enterprise-grade WordPress theme from scratch. So when we say we no longer recommend it for ecommerce, it's not an uninformed opinion.
What Changed
We've spent 25+ years evaluating every major ecommerce and CMS platform. WordPress is a capable content management system. But for ecommerce — particularly for retailers with growth ambitions — it consistently underdelivers. The plugin dependency, the maintenance overhead, the performance ceiling, the WooCommerce complexity. We watched client after client fight the same battles.
In 2015 we built our first Shopify store, for Origin Coffee in Falmouth. The difference was immediate and obvious. We've built exclusively on Shopify and Shopify Plus ever since, and we've never had cause to reconsider that decision.

If you're running WooCommerce and selling online, we'd recommend at least understanding what a Shopify migration would look like for your business before committing to another year on the platform.
