Why We Became a Shopify-Only Agency After 25 Years
For most of our history, Dewsign was genuinely platform-agnostic.
We built on our own proprietary CMS and ecommerce platform, on bespoke PHP and Laravel frameworks and used WordPress (sparingly).
When clients asked which platform was right for them, the honest answer varied by project.
We had no commercial incentive to recommend any particular platform.
That changed — not suddenly, but gradually, as the evidence accumulated project by project, migration by migration.
The Evidence That Built Up
The pattern started with Origin Coffee in 2015 and reinforced itself with every subsequent Shopify build.
The developer experience was consistently better.
The time between brief and live store was consistently shorter.
The ongoing maintenance overhead was consistently lower.
The clients were consistently more capable of managing their own stores without agency support for routine tasks.
Simultaneously, we were watching the patterns on other platforms — Magento clients accumulating technical debt, WooCommerce stores hitting scaling ceilings, bespoke builds delivering short-term satisfaction followed by long-term maintenance burdens.
Why Specialisation Produces Better Outcomes
An agency that maintains genuine expertise across five platforms is, in practice, a generalist on each one.
Platform expertise isn't just about knowing how to build on a platform — it's knowing the subtle behaviours, the edge cases, the app ecosystem's quality spectrum, the update cadence, the API's constraints and capabilities, the optimisation patterns that separate good stores from great ones.
We know Shopify in that way.
We build on it every week, across the full range of project complexity, from small brand builds to enterprise Plus migrations.
That volume of experience compounds into advantage that serves our clients.
The Honest Assessment of Shopify
Shopify isn't perfect.
There are things it can't do or doesn't do elegantly.
We tell clients about these limitations honestly, and occasionally we advise a client that a different platform is more appropriate for their specific requirements.
But for the overwhelming majority of ambitious UK retailers and growing brands that we work with, Shopify is the right foundation.
We chose it because we've been in this industry long enough to recognise quality from the inside.
If you want to understand how Shopify might work for your specific business, we'd be happy to have an honest conversation about whether it's the right fit.
