What Shopify Checkout Customisation Really Looks Like in Practice
Shopify's checkout is the most optimised checkout in ecommerce.
On standard Shopify, you don't customise it — you use it as Shopify has engineered it, and for most merchants that is entirely the right call.
On Shopify Plus, the checkout opens up through Shopify Functions, checkout extensibility and checkout UI extensions. Understanding precisely what this allows is worth doing before deciding whether Plus makes sense for your business.
Custom Discount Logic with Shopify Functions
Shopify Functions extends standard discounting to cover genuinely complex logic: tiered pricing based on cart quantity or value, customer-segment-specific discounts without requiring separate storefronts, bundle discounts that trigger only when specific product combinations are present, and conditional free gift logic that responds to cart contents dynamically.
Native Functions-based discounts run at checkout speed without API calls or app loading — which matters commercially, because complex promotions drive real conversion lift.
Payment Method Rules
Shopify Functions allows you to show, hide or reorder payment methods based on conditions you define: hiding cash-on-delivery for international orders, showing pay-by-invoice only to B2B customers, hiding certain payment methods for specific product categories.
This level of control was previously impossible without building a custom checkout app — Functions handles it natively, without app overhead.
Checkout UI Extensions
Checkout UI extensions inject custom content into defined positions within the checkout — above and below the order summary, in the information, shipping and payment steps, and in the post-purchase thank you page.
Common uses include product upsells at cart review, trust badges at key conversion moments, custom form fields capturing order-specific information, and loyalty programme integration.
The extensions run in Shopify's checkout sandbox — they can't break the checkout, and they're reviewed by Shopify before use.
A Realistic Assessment
Checkout customisation is genuinely powerful, but it's not a universal justification for upgrading to Plus.
The businesses that benefit most are those with specific checkout requirements that standard Shopify genuinely can't meet: complex B2B pricing rules, multi-tier promotional mechanics, product categories with compliance requirements, or premium brands where checkout design is part of the customer experience.
