Shopify POS for Independent Retailers: A Practical Guide

Shopify POS for Independent Retailers: A Practical Guide

For independent retailers running both a physical shop and an online store, inventory management can be a headache.

Product sells in-store, but the website still shows it as available. A customer orders online and arrives in-store to collect it — except the item was sold yesterday.

Two systems, two sets of data, two sources of customer frustration.

Shopify POS addresses this problem directly by unifying the physical and online retail operations under a single system.

What Shopify POS Does

At its core, Shopify POS is a point of sale application that runs on iPad or iPhone and connects to the same Shopify backend that powers your online store.

Products, inventory levels, customer profiles, and order history are the same data set whether you're looking at the POS terminal in the shop or the admin panel for the online store.

Inventory updates in real time — when a product is sold in-store, the inventory count decreases immediately in Shopify, which means your online store also reflects the updated availability immediately.

Shopify POS Pro vs Lite

Shopify POS Lite is included with all plans and covers essential functionality.

POS Pro (additional monthly cost per location) adds unlimited register licences, advanced staff permissions and shift management, detailed retail reports, and buy-online/pick-up-in-store (BOPIS) with ready-for-pickup notifications.

For most independent retailers with one or two locations doing meaningful sales volume, POS Pro is worth the additional cost.

What Shopify POS Doesn't Do Well

Offline functionality is limited — Shopify POS requires an internet connection for most operations. Complex product management through the POS is constrained; it's designed for selling, not for catalogue management.

If you have a large number of products that require frequent updates to pricing or descriptions, you'll still do most of that management in the Shopify admin.
